Discover Christ Church Heritage Celebration

On Saturday 6th and Sunday 7th July, Christ Church in Bradford on Avon will be holding its first ever Heritage Celebration weekend. The church will be welcoming people from across the local community and further afield, as they hold drop-in workshops, talks and demonstrations for people of all ages.

Becky Strike, Community Outreach Project Officer, has said ‘ We really cannot wait to welcome everyone to this exciting event. We hope it will bring people from our community together as we celebrate the history of our beautiful Victorian building and churchyard.”

It comes as the Discover Christ Church! National Lottery Heritage funded project is in the midst of its restoration. The conservation work includes the newly repaired clock and spire, new energy-efficient lighting and at a later date will see the churches many wall paintings restored. Alongside this programme of restoration; a vast range of heritage-themed activities have been taking place in the church. The Heritage Celebration weekend itself is a direct result of suggestions shared by the local community of activities and workshops they would like to see take place at the church.

The line-up includes ‘have a go’ at stone carving, directed by local specialist stone carver Jem Hobbs, Time Tots archaeology in the churchyard for under 10’s, led by expert archaeologist Dr Emily Hellewell and a history talk on the church by Christ Church’s very own Ann Chapman. There will also be a range of craft activities on offer, artefacts on display and demonstrations taking place throughout the event. These include woodcarving, traditional building techniques and embroidery. Refreshments will of course be served too with plenty of cake.

These are just a few of the free activities on offer over the 2-day event. This will all be rounded off with a family-friendly church service, led by the benefice’s new Rector, Rev. Katie Jackson, followed by a BBQ.

All of these activities are completely free! Although donations will be welcome towards the church’s kitchen and toilet project.

So make sure to save the date, and pop along from 10am each day to join in the fun!

Further details of the full schedule will be shared shortly and further information can be found on their Facebook page. Search ‘Discover Christ Church’ or email admin@discoverchristchurch.org.uk to find out more.
